Social Security update: SSI Recipients will get $1,755 in Rare Double Payments in December

Social Security update: Supplemental Security Income recipients will receive their second of two December payments in three weeks, bringing the 2022 calendar to a close and kicking off the payment schedule for the following year.

According to the Social Security Administration, eligible claimants will get their first payment of $841 on December 1 and their second payment of $914 on December 30, for a total of $1,755 for the month. The second installment of December payments is higher than the first because payments will increase in 2023, partly due to rising yearly cost-of-living adjustments to keep up with inflation.

People receive two Supplemental Security Income payments in December, one of three months per year. This year’s other months with two installments were April and September.

The double payments compensate for the months when no payment is made, ensuring that eligible recipients receive 12 payments per year, according to the schedule. These are the months of January, May, and October.

In December, eligible couples will get two $1,261 payments, with the amount increasing to $1,371 in 2023. On the same days, essential persons (those who reside with a Supplemental Security Income recipient and provide necessary care) will get a $421 payment and a $458 payment.

According to the agency, the Social Security Administration issues monthly SSI checks on the business day preceding months that begin on a weekend or holiday to ensure recipients receive the check by the first of the month. December is one of these months because January 1, 2023 is a weekend holiday.

This type of double payment will take place in March, June, September, and December 2023.
